Former Illinois RB Kyron Cumby Transfers To Delaware

The Ryan Carty era will begin for the Blue Hens in 2022 and expectations are high as the team returns multiple top contributors from the 2021 season. The running back position was one of the few groups that experienced major turnover this offseason and was a top priority for the new staff on the recruiting trail. Delaware landed a huge commitment today as former Illinois running back Kyron Cumby announced his commitment to the Blue Hens.

Cumby was a former 3-star prospect out of Plano, TX and ranked as a Top-10 all-purpose back in the class of 2019. The 5-foot-8, 180-pound running back was a 1st Team All-District selection as a junior and won the 6A Co-Offensive Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore. Over his three seasons at Plano High School Cumby rushed for over 3,300 yards and 47 touchdowns; while also totaling over 1,100 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns. Cumby held offers from Colorado, Illinois, Iowa State, Texas Tech, & Washington State out of high school before committing to Illinois in June of 2018.

At Illinois, Cumby saw action in nine games throughout the 2019-2020 seasons before announcing his transfer before the 2021 season after the Fighting Illini moved Cumby to the wide receiver spot. Cumby walked on at Texas Tech for the 2021 season, but did not see any action for the Red Raiders. He announced his transfer from Texas Tech in October of 2021 and will have three years of eligibility left for the Blue Hens.

Cumby will bring versatility and speed to the running back spot for the Blue Hens after he was clocked running a 4.38 40-yard dash according to 247Sports. Delaware lost Dejoun Lee this offseason; who led the Blue Hens with over 800 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns in the 2021 season and reserve running back Khory Spruill also graduated this offseason. Cumby will join redshirt junior Quincy Watson in the running back room for the 2022 season and should offer a dynamic 1-2 punch for the Blue Hens on the ground.

Delaware looks to reclaim the CAA Championship for the 3rd time in the 2022 season and open their season on the road against Navy before hosting MEAC contender Delaware State in Week 2.
