Former ECU DB Nasir Clerk Transfers To Delaware State

*UPDATE (June 18th; 11:25am)* Nasir Clerk will not attend Delaware State due to ineligible grades

Delaware State enters the 2022 season as one of the top contenders in the MEAC after a 5-6 season in 2021. The Hornets have been busy on the recruiting trail as they have landed multiple impact transfers this offseason. The secondary received a massive addition as former East Carolina defensive back Nasir Clerk was officially announced by Delaware State today on social media.

Clerk was a 3-star prospect out of Irvington, NJ and ranked as a Top-60 player in the state of New Jersey. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound cornerback ranked as a Top-250 defensive back in the class of 2020. Clerk played his first two seasons at Morris Catholic where he totaled 43 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 8 pass breakups over his freshmen and sophomore years. He transferred to Irvington High School before his junior season and earned 1st Team All-Super Conference Freedom White Division honors as a junior after totaling 37 tackles and 4 interceptions. He announced his commitment to East Carolina over other offers from Cincinnati, Buffalo, UMass, & Syracuse.

Clerk saw action in one game during his true freshman season, but did not record any statistics. He was primed to be a top contributor for the Pirates in the 2021 season, but entered the transfer portal in September of 2021. Clerk will have four years of eligibility remaining at Delaware State.

The defensive backfield for the Hornets was extremely young last season as multiple underclassmen led the secondary in 2021. The Delaware State secondary returns the Top-3 interception leaders from the 2021 season including HERO Sports Freshman All-American Esaias Guthrie. The Hornets also return MEAC All-Americans Charles Peeler and Romell Harris-Freeman. Clerk will have an immediate impact on the Delaware State secondary and could give the Hornets one of the best secondaries in the MEAC going into the 2022 season.

Delaware State opens the 2022 season against Lincoln University on September 3rd before taking on in-state rival Delaware in Week 2.
