FCS Football: Highest Graded Returning Quarterbacks In 2023

We utilized the Pro Football Focus (PFF) database and grading system to take a look at the highest-graded returning quarterbacks across FCS football entering the 2023 season.

Each player’s PFF Grade represents their overall offensive grade from the 2022 season, including postseason games. Quarterbacks who played 20% of the minimum number of snaps were included in the rankings below. All rankings and statistics were gathered using the Pro Football Focus database.

1. Theo Day (Northern Iowa)

PFF Offensive Grade: 93.7 

2022 Statistics: 65% comp, 3,128 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 4 rushing touchdowns

2. Matthew Sluka (Holy Cross)

PFF Offensive Grade: 91.6

2022 Statistics: 57% comp, 2,515 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, 1,021 rushing yards, 10 rushing touchdowns

T-3. Parker McKinney (Eastern Kentucky)

PFF Offensive Grade: 91.1

2022 Statistics: 68% comp, 3,947 passing yards, 33 passing touchdowns, 354 rushing yards, 8 rushing touchdowns

T-3. Gevani McCoy (Idaho)

PFF Offensive Grade: 91.1

2022 Statistics: 69% comp, 2,727 passing yards, 27 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 3 rushing touchdowns

T-3. Davius Richard (North Carolina Central)

PFF Offensive Grade: 91.1

2022 Statistics: 64% comp, 2,661 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, 788 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns



6. Darius Wilson (William & Mary)

PFF Offensive Grade: 90.6

2022 Statistics: 63% comp, 2,252 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, 534 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdowns

7. Mark Gronowski (South Dakota State)

PFF Offensive Grade: 90.5

2022 Statistics: 65% comp, 2,967 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, 408 rushing yards, 12 rushing touchdowns

8. Blake Stenstrom (Princeton)

PFF Offensive Grade: 90.4

2022 Statistics: 69% comp, 2,742 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 3 rushing touchdowns

T-9. Tommy Mellott (Montana State)

PFF Offensive Grade: 87.9

2022 Statistics: 61% comp, 1,723 passing yards, 10 passing touchdowns, 1,061 rushing yards, 13 rushing touchdowns

T-9. Cole Doyle (Saint Francis)

PFF Offensive Grade: 87.9

2022 Statistics: 65% comp, 1,931 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, 310 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown



11. Dante Chachere (Portland State)

PFF Offensive Grade: 87.0

2022 Statistics: 60% comp, 1,956 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, 609 rushing yards, 7 rushing touchdowns

12. Nolan Grooms (Yale)

PFF Offensive Grade: 85.3

2022 Statistics: 58% comp, 1,660 passing yards, 14 passing touchdowns, 745 rushing yards, 6 rushing touchdowns

13. Michael Hiers (Samford)

PFF Offensive Grade: 84.7

2022 Statistics: 77% comp, 3,544 passing yards, 36 passing touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 4 rushing touchdowns

2022 Statistics: 63% comp, 3,154 passing yards, 27 passing touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 2 rushing touchdowns

  1. Tommy Schuster in 2022: 68.7 pct 2728 yds 20 tds 5 ints 147 rating. Returning next season. Please explain how he can’t make this list of Aidan Boumann. What a joke. Nice list.

    1. These rankings are only PFF’s season grade for all the FCS players. The official positional rankings for the publication will be released later this offseason.
