Chattanooga Lands Former Washington State EDGE Marquise Freeman

Chattanooga is looking to build upon their 6-5 season in 2021, in which the Mocs lost five games by a total of just 25 points. The defense was a strong point for the Mocs last season and multiple top contributors return for the upcoming 2022 season for a defense that only allowed 17.1 points per game. One of the deepest groups for the Mocs was on the defensive front, but that did not stop the staff from bringing in even more talent from the FBS level.

EDGE rusher Marquise Freeman announced his transfer to Chattanooga this afternoon on his social media.

Freeman was a 3-star prospect out of Cocoa, FL in the class of 2020. As a junior Freeman was named All-Space Coast League and totaled over 65 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, & 7 sacks for the season. He was a major contributor in Cocoa High School reaching the Florida State 4A Semifinals as a senior with 36 tackles and 4 sacks.

Freeman held offers from Washington State, Boston College, Coastal Carolina, Colorado State, & FIU coming out of high school. He announced his commitment to Washington State in December of 2019.

Freeman did not appear in a game for Washington State during the 2020 season as a freshman and did not see much action during the 2021 season this past year. He announced his transfer from Washington State after the season in January of this year.

The Mocs defensive line returns a tremendous amount of production of the 2021 season. Devonn Maxwell returns for his senior season after his breakout season with 12 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss. Ben Brewton and Jay Person also return after having big seasons for the Mocs in 2021.

The addition of Freeman to the defensive line for Chattanooga should solidify the front-7 going into the 2022 season. The Mocs are looking to claim their first SOCON Championship since winning three in a row from 2013-2015. Chattanooga will open the season against Wofford on September 3rd in primetime before traveling to take on Eastern Illinois in Week 2.
