Bethune-Cookman Lands Palmetto Prep LB Saim Safdar

Bethune-Cookman enters their 2nd season in the SWAC and is looking to rebound from a 2-9 season in 2021. The linebacker spot experienced major losses this offseason as the Wildcats lost multiple top contributors. The Wildcats filled a major hole at the linebacker position as Palmetto Prep standout Saim Safdar announced his commitment to Bethune-Cookman this weekend on social media.

Safdar enrolled at Palmetto Preparatory Academy after graduating from Ridgefield Park High School. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound linebacker totaled 40 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, and 1 forced fumble in his seven games at Palmetto Prep. Over his high school and prep career Safdar totaled 74 tackles, 48 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions, 11.5 sacks, and 10 fumble recoveries. He announced his commitment to Bethune-Cookman over offers from Wagner, New Haven, Assumption, and Clarion.

The Wildcats lost 1st Team SWAC All-American Untareo Johnson and 2nd Team SWAC All-American Te’Keven Thomas this offseason at the linebacker spot. Safdar will join Oregon transfer Ge’Mon Eaford, South Carolina transfer Rosendo Louis, Devin Harrell, and Tavoris Wilkins Jr. as new additions to the linebacker core for the Wildcats.

Safdar will be a versatile piece for the Wildcats as he can fit into multiple roles on the Wildcats defense. He has 4.5 speed and does well in coverage situations, which allows him to play a box safety role if needed. He can also slide into an EDGE rusher role for the Wildcats, which is similar to what Johnson brought to the Bethune-Cookman defense. Safdar also has experience at the MIKE position and could be the leader of the Bethune-Cookman defense.

Bethune-Cookman opens their 2022 season against ACC contender Miami (FL) on September 3rd before hosting the 2021 Celebration Bowl Champions in South Carolina State.
